Landlords evenly-split for and against rent controls – poll shock

A shock poll commissioned by a think tank claims that almost even numbers of landlords are for and against rent controls.

The poll – for think tank Common Wealth – surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2,157 people about a range of housing issues. In addition, it polled 4,369 specifically on their views for rent caps.

It found that 44% of landlords expressed support for a cap on rents, compared to 47% who were opposed. Although lower than support in the population at large,

(75%) the think tank says “this is a remarkable level of support.”

The same survey found that over two-thirds of respondents supported a tax on second homes to help pay for more social housing; and 62% said Capital Gains Tax should also go up on buy to let properties.

The study also considered the social circles of respondents, and their voting preferences.

Those who knew more tenants were more likely to support rental reform while among Labour supporters no fewer than 79% favoured higher CGT on second homes and 73% favoured higher CGT on buy to lets.

Amongst Conservative voters the figures were 64% and 53% respectively.

Among Reform UK supporters, the figures were 63% for second homes, and 59 % for buy to lets.

Mathew Lawrence, Common Wealth’s director, says: “Our new analysis shows there is broad support for ambitious reform of the housing system across different social groups.

“We found widespread support for raising capital gains tax on additional properties, across voting preferences and including among groups with more housing wealth, like outright owners.

“From building more social housing to taxing those with surplus housing wealth, it is clear the public want change. With the government focussing on delivery this year – to address Britain’s overlapping crises – a bold agenda on housing is critical.”
